The initial enthusiasm for the war was great and many soldiers thought it would be a great deed to serve your country and go and that you would be back in no time. However these people who had never fought in war did not yet know how cruel and terrible it could be and only heard how glorious war is from old veterans. As soldiers got to the battlefield they then truly realized how scary war is, their initial enthusiasm quickly disappeared. ( The pictures shows a young man going to war happy to fight for his country). The poster below depicts a soldier saying " Coo-ee- Won't YOU come? ". This poster is made to look as appealing to you as possible in an effort to recruit some more soldiers. By saying "Won't YOU come?" it is not speaking to the general population but you as an individual. Also by making the soldier really big and having him stand on the country it makes it seem as we are winning and having a good time by showing that he is bigger than everything else and that he is on top of everything. This poster was an effective way of getting more troops to support the allies however if they knew what they were getting into they would have never tried to sign up. This video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpgzuVuHg1U (Peter Jackson - Restored Gallipoli Film - Anzac Day Primary Source) depicts actual rare footage of the Anzac's landing at Gallipoli. This is very special to New Zealand as it was the first chance families got to see what it was like for the men who fought for New Zealand. This video shows people what the men at gallipoli were going through and how through their efforts New Zealand became more of a united country. The letter below clearly shows the terrible effects on war and how it affects families. It tells of a mum who wants money to visit her sons grave who had died in the battle. This not only shows that the effects war had on the soldiers but how it would completely tear families apart knowing that their son had died. This is one of the main reasons that after this battle and seeing how cruel war truly is people all over the world not just New zealand tried to stop another war breaking out. Even today the idea that war is bad still lives and people all over the world are trying their best to stop any violence going on around the world.
