On The 5th of August 1914 New Zealand received a declaration announcing World war I in New Zealand. -1- .World war 1 had a huge impact not only on the soldiers but also on their families who lost dear family members, this is especially true for New Zealand as we only had a little over a million population so any loss for New Zealand was heavily felt. Also the absence of male family members meant that woman had to step up and take over their jobs, they also fund raised for the troops at war. Also how the initial enthusiasm by the soldiers to go to war ( as it was at the time seen to be great deed to go to war ) quickly changed as the soldiers experienced the harsh reality of war which affected them not only during the war but for many years after .From then on New Zealand joined World War , this war costed New Zealand thousands of lives approximately 16,697 New Zealanders were killed. -2- . One major battle in the war was the battle of Gallipoli. This battle commenced on the 25th of April 1915 and ended on the 9th of January 1916. This battle is one of the most significant battles to NZ even to this day. It was a heavy loss to NZ with around 2721 New Zealanders losing their lives. -3- . Even though this was a huge loss to New Zealand we still commemorate it by ANZAC day which is celebrated every year on 25th April. Despite all of the deaths that occurred during the battle this is one of the most important battles to New Zealand not only do we still commemorate it to this day it is the battle that gave New Zealand a sense of identity. Instead of being just part of Britain we became our own country and New Zealanders became much more united and understood what being a New Zealander really was. This was the battle that put New Zealand on the map and let other countries know what New Zealand could do. Almost 100 years later the impact of the battle on the soldiers, families and communities is still felt today through ANZAC day.
